About Portia

This is a show case for her handmade, knitted handbags . Each piece is one of a kind, and is individually created by Portia in her studio in Strawberry Hill, south west London.

The pieces in the gallery are constantly being added to as Portia creates them, or archived, as they are claimed by their rightful owner!

Portia studied textile design at Chelsea School of Art where she chose to specialize in knitted textiles. She went on to get an MA in Fashion Knitwear from the RCA. Her fabric designs have sold internationally and been used by design houses such as Armani, Ralph Lauren and Banana Republic. Her own-label designs have found homes with discerning women around the world, from New York to California, San Paulo to Tokyo, London to Cornwall to name but a few.

She has always been inspired in her designing by the ethos of William Morris when he said:
“Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful”

The idea of transforming her fabrics into handmade accessories initially arose out of a desire to see the whole design process through from start to finish, and  to be able to sew her own label into her designs. The desire swiftly became reality one evening when she realized her own need for a new handbag!

She now takes great pleasure in creating each new piece, playing with the detail both inside and out, combining the colour palette, working out durable construction techniques and creating what she believes to be a beautiful yet practical piece.  A more abstract pleasure lies in believing that, at some point , it’s rightful owner will appear, fall in love with it and carry on it’s journey.

So, with such an eclectic collection to choose from, her only advice is to follow your heart, and should no piece cry out to you, simply come back soon and your bag may be there waiting!
